Director's Statement
"Novenario" is a love letter to my family. It is a story of acceptance. All of my life I have always felt out of place, even among my own family. My parents migrated to the United States, I was raised in Hawaii without a heavy focus of my race or culture. As I got older, I began to feel out of place at family functions and question my place among my family and my race.
In January 2021, I lost my grandmother. This was incredibly difficult for my Dad and me. She never spoke English and I never learned Spanish growing up so there was always a disconnect between us. I started learning Spanish through the use of apps so I could better communicate with her, but unfortunately I never got the chance. This film is dedicated to her and the memories I wish I could share with her.
